The intent of the secondary school mathematics program is to prepare all
students to use mathematics and problem-solving skills in further
education or on the job. The program focuses on mastering the
objectives of the PNG Lower/Upper Secondary School syllabi; problem-solving, communicating mathematically,
reasoning mathematically, applying mathematics to real-world
situations, and using technology. Mathematics is a compulsory subject for all students. In grades 11 and 12 students are able to stream into either Advanced Mathematics or General Mathematics.
It is very important for students to understand that Mathematics is very much a practical subject, i.e. a subject that you learn by "doing". Much of the course requires that you have mastered skills from previous work so that you can progress to newer topics. It is vital that students develop fluency in using tools and topics and that this can only be developed through concrete, experiential learning and by completing graded exercises. Projects, homework and practical activities are very very important if the student is to develop sufficient skills. The Department has very specific policies on homework, attendance and assessment as well as insisting that all students bring correct and appropriate equipment to every lesson.
